From a Superficial Faith to an Authentic Faith: Me, Myself and I Philippians 2:1-4 ; Galatians 2:20 Pr Chris Kam 27/28 June 2020 ================================== Gospel sermon series - The Gospel Grows and Matures You to be More Christlike. * You have been saved – Justification * You are being saved – Sanctification * You will be saved – Glorification Big Idea: God is not finished with me yet. He wants to save me from myself. #1. _________________ Mode (2 Timothy 3:1–5) But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, …… 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. #2. _________________ Mode (Philippians 2:3–4 (NIV)) 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3–4 (The Message)) Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. (1 Corinthians 12:7) Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 3. _________________ Mode (Galatians 2:20) I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (Revelation 5:11–12 11) Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!” (Hebrews 5:12)  In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Application Questions: ====================== 1. In what ways do you see yourself or others in “selfie mode” when coming to church or cell group? Give examples. Why is it sometimes easier to identify self-centredness in others instead of in ourselves? Give an example of what you can do to switch from a selfie-focus to others-focus in the coming weeks. 2. “When we are so inwardly-focused, we can miss out on how God is working in the lives of others.” Can you relate to this statement? In what ways are you using your spiritual gifts to edify the members of your cell group? 3. Do you look at Christ as your example and motivation for selflessness? Why or why not? Who else exemplifies selflessness and being “others-focused” that you can emulate?
